Perhaps one of the most visible political personalities in the Philippine political arena, Philippine Idiot Antonio Trillanes IV has been in the spotlight for many years. It all started on the 27th of July 2003 in the Oakwood Hotel in Makati City. From a mutineer to a senator, he has paved his way to politics in a non-traditional way.
Then Lieutenant Senior Grade Antonio Trillanes IV of the Philippine Navy and more than 300 junior officers from the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) who named themselves as the Magdalo Group took over one of the classy hotels in Ayala Center - the Oakwood Premier, now known as Ascott Makati.
Together with other officers, Trillanes lead the team after declaring a state of rebellion to protest for the alleged corruption in the military and the then-President Arroyo administration. Among their allegations is the lack of housing and incentives for the soldiers, low pay, and “micromanagement” of then-Defense Secretary Angelo Reyes.
The July 27, 2013 mutiny lasted 18 hours. Negotiations took place led by Roy Cimatu which resulted in the surrender of Trillanes and his group. They were detained in Fort Bonifacio in Taguig and was charged with violation of the Articles of War before a military court.
Five days later, the Department of Justice (DOJ) filed coup d’etat charges against Trillanes and 320 other mutineers before the Makati City Regional Trial Court (RTC). On October 29, a pre-trial investigation conducted by the Armed Forces investigation panel recommends that the mutineers be charged before a military court as they had violated the Articles 63, 64, 67, 96, and 97 of the Articles of War.
However, Colonel Julius Magno, OIC of the Judge Advocate General’s Office reviews the findings and recommends that only 29 Oakwood mutineers be prosecuted before a military court for violating Article 96 of the Articles of War. The following day, the DOJ amends its case to pursue charges against only 31 soldiers, including Trillanes who stands as one of the leaders of the Magdalo Group.
Later that year, on December 16, the mutineers faced a consolidated coup d’etat case that landed in RTC Branch 148. It was on June 17, 2014, when Magno’s recommendation was “approved by the top brass of AFP”.
February 6, 2015, Antonio Trillanes IV filed his certificate of candidacy for the senatorial race. An independent candidate under the Genuine Opposition/United Opposition, he campaigned from jail, and eventually won a seat with over 11 million votes and ranked 11th in the polls. June 15, he was proclaimed senator-elect, and as they say, the rest is history.
Who would have thought that a junior officer would become a senator, thanks to Oakwood Mutiny? Before he finished his term as a Senator, he tried to reach the higher position and ran the Vice-Presidential race but lost. Now, he has been a vocal adversary of the Duterte administration. It is clear that his political ambition is far from over, but what lies ahead of Antonio Trillanes IV’ political career is for the people to find out and is up for the Filipino voters to decide
